Oh, Lord, 71! (or seb’nty one, as they say in these pine hollers in Wendell)

Deep appreciations for all of your glorious birthday wishes!

At three score and ten plus one, I SOMETIMES feel like singing the baritone solo from George Gershwin’s PORGY AND BESS:

And nothing’s plenty for me
I got no car, got no mule
I got no misery
The folks with plenty of plenty
Got a lock on the door
'Fraid somebody’s a-goin’ to rob ’em
While they’re out a-makin’ more
What for?
I got no lock on the door
That’s no way to be
They steal the rug from the floor
That’s okay with me
’Cause the things that I prize
Like the stars in the skies
All are free!>

Yet I so appreciate my friends and relatives—and the new friends I’ve made on the Needham Broughton Class of ’65 Web site!

Carpe diem, everybody!

Steve, may you have a GRAND natal day! To celebrate, here's a photo of Kittrell Drive taken in fall 1960. Foreground: Danny Weatherington, an Our Lady of Lourdes school chum; background, my sister Carmen walking back home. We'd just returned from a pickup:) bb game. To the left, Fallon Park; to the right, your house--from the picture window you may have been staring at us at the moment of shutter-click!

Doug, sorry I'm two days late with this message. I hope you had a serene and glorious three score and ten! Wow! The biblical age! May you have many more "scores" (I mean 20-year periods) in the future! Let's think about lunch or dinner in Knightdale the next time you're out Zebulon-way.

The home where I grew up, 2714 Kittrell Drive, Raleigh, NC, two blocks from Our Lady of Lourdes School, from which I "graduated" from 8th grade in June 1961. I lived in that home from July 1957 through August 1965, when I went off to UNC-CH.
