ANNOUNCEMENTS

BORN

1934

DIED

2021

Donald Scott Woods

March 12, 1934 - February 10, 2021

Donald Scott Woods passed away peacefully at his home on February 10, 2021.

Born on March 12, 1934, in Bluefield, West Virginia, Don grew up in Roanoke, Virginia. There, he formed friendships that lasted throughout his lifetime, especially his fellow William Fleming Sports Hall of Famers, Al McClearn, Don Divers and Corbin Bailey.

Don received a football scholarship from Virginia Tech. He transferred to Austin Peay University, where he played football and broke three school records in track. After graduating in 1957, he enlisted in the Navy Flight Program at Pensacola, Florida. For two years, he was the starting end on the famed Pensacola Navy Goshawks football team.

After leaving the Navy, Don attended the University of Tennessee and earned a master's degree. While coaching track at North Carolina State University, he won a competitive national fellowship to the University of Michigan, where he was awarded his third college degree, magna cum laude.

Don started his long teaching and coaching career in 1961 at Needham Broughton High School in Raleigh, North Carolina. He later taught at Rocky Mount Academy in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, then at Staunton River and Jefferson Forest High Schools in Bedford County, Virginia. He returned to North Carolina to teach eight more years before retiring in 1996.

Don's many interests and talents included sports, painting, sports, woodwork, sports, classical music, and sports. He was also well known for his unforgettable way of telling a story, sports, golf (five hole-in-ones) and, finally, sports. He had many friends — and he wanted to list them all here as a final thank you and goodbye, but the newspaper does not have enough space.

Don was preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn Van Wagoner. He leaves behind his son, Jack Mann and wife, Lisa; his daughters, Holly Woods Layne, Laura Carrington, and Leslie Ann Hicks and her husband, Kirk; his grandchildren, Jake Stinnett and Jason, Jessica, Isaac and Sarah Mann; his college roommate, Bill "Roomy" Alexander of Georgia; and his Bedford coffee buddies.

The family is most thankful for his caretaker, Tracey Goodman, who provided Don much happiness in his last days.

A memorial honoring his life will be held this spring. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to his favorite charity, The Salvation Army of Roanoke.

Reunion Canceled

Dear Class of '65 Classmates,

I hope this letter finds you and your families well in these uncharted times of the Coronavirus. Most of us are in stay-at-home mode, practicing social distancing, washing hands and wearing masks attempting to weather this Pandemic.

I am sure it will come as no surprise that we have made the decision to cancel our 55th Class Reunion which was set for August 14-16. This seems to be the wise decision and we will hopefully be able to reschedule at some point next year. At this time, we are not selecting a date until we see how this Pandemic plays out. Our Reunion Committee is unable to meet to make plans and we cannot secure contracts, etc. necessary to hold the reunion.

Please know that we are disappointed to delay seeing our friends and I assure you when we deem it safe to begin planning again, we will do so and will keep you informed.

Thank you always for your support… the Broughton Class of 1965 is the best and we will look forward to a time when we can gather and celebrate our friendships once again.

Sending wishes that you will be safe and well.

Martha and the Reunion Committee

Below is the list of those who have registered (with those listed in red the additions since last week's posting). If it is not on there, get your name on the list. If it is on there, get in touch with those whose names are not, and encourage them to send in their registrations!

In just six weeks we will be gathering to celebrate our 50th! Below are those classmates who have registered for the event, and we have heard from many others who tell us, their "check is in the mail!" We will update the list as we receive registrations, and if your name is not listed today, we hope it will be soon. And if you don't see someone's name and are hoping to see them, give them a call or send a note to encourage them to come! An update will be posted on Monday, but here is who we have as of 7/15/15:

The invitations were mailed last week, and we hope you have received yours and are busy completing your registration for our reunion weekend! We are posting the invitation and reply card below just in case you did not receive one.

If you would like to print the reply card, you can save it as two images (front and back) to your computer, print and complete it and mail it in with your check as directed on the card.
